The Mimic Octopus

With more and more evidence mounting that fish are much more intelligent than people originally thought comes this strange creature: The Mimic Octopus.

The octopus was found in the 1990's off the coast of Indonesia by local fisherman. Fisherman were unsure of what the creature was until they began to watch it carefully; they realized that it was in fact in octopus.

This octopus changes to mimic the shape of other sea creatures when it feels threatened in its environment. Some of the shapes that the octopus has been known to "shape-shift" into include but is not limited to a lion fish, a poisonous sea snake and a flounder.

Scientists are still unsure about how this octopus learned this defense mechanism; Scientists still need to continue to study this octopus in order to learn more about it. There are many other shapes that the octopus takes on but the scientists are still uncertain what the octopus is trying to imitate.
