Does My Fish Have Cotton Mouth?

Cotton Mouth is a fish disease that can be caused by many things. Some of the many causes of Cotton Mouth include:

- stress
- poor water conditions
- unbalanced diet
- the process by which the fish was shipped

The means that the fish can be infected through are:

- gills
- open sores
- mouth

*This disease is highly contagious and can be spread by many means.

Some of the ways it may be transmitted include, but are not limited to:
- nets used by the sick fish
- uneaten food by contaminated fish
- the aquarium water
(basically anything and everything that the fish with cotton mouth comes in contact with)

If caught in time, this disease is treatable and curable. The way you can treat the disease is to clean the aquarium thoroughly. Make sure to vacuum the gravel and change out some of the old aquarium water with fresh, de-chlorinated water.

After cleaning the aquarium, add some aquarium salt.
*Note: This treatment should not be used on scaleless fish. The salt can harm them and make the cotton mouth much worse.*

The way to help prevent this disease from re-occurring is to do regular water changes and to examine fish before you purchase them from any pet store. Also, be sure and disinfect everything that has come in contact with the sick fish.
